Surprisingly, the conference at Delhi University was held not by the Hindi department, but by the Political Science department, under the leadership of Professor Satyajit Singh, who saw that Raag Darbari might offer a framework to rethink the top-down version of political science practised at DU and elsewhere, generating in its stead a vernacular theory for understanding how politics actually works on the ground in rural India. Rangnath’s eyes are opened as to the real situation of the country and he realises that the ideals of the nationalist leaders have failed India dramatically.
